Two Crownings in One Day: The Player Revolution and Pinyin Association
A frontier fortress’s maturity is measured not by the cities it has taken but by how long it holds under siege. Everything Hongguo TV did this day was siege homework.
I. Sharpening the blade first: the player revolution
The master’s marching orders moved player optimization ahead of T0: “optimize the player extensively for smoothness and clarity, then cut T3 outright — no domestic update route.” Three pieces landed: buffer tuning (1.5s to first frame, 30s target buffer, 60s cap, keyed on time not size), the decode ceiling raised to 4K@60 (the source is single-rate 1080p today, reserved for multi-rate), and next-episode preloading for seamless continuation (silently resolved and enqueued at 25 seconds remaining). Rebuffer and dropped-frame instrumentation went into logcat at the same time — so every future optimization has a ledger to answer to.
The honest boundary was then stated plainly: ExoPlayer does not pre-buffer next-episode video data; preloading saves the one-to-two seconds of resolution round-trip, while slow-CDN startup still depends on bandwidth — not something the player can optimize alone. The control experiment then delivered the strongest evidence: at the same hour, a healthy CDN held zero rebuffering for sixty seconds, whereas the drama that stuttered five times in seventy-five seconds earlier — the fault lay with the CDN, not the engine.
II. Rescue: DNS-level diagnosis
The previous round left one open question: how to make playback genuinely fail without disturbing the network. The last round’s reckless WiFi toggling had already drawn the master’s roar (“do NOT touch the box’s WiFi”), and this round’s solution was delicate and precise — point private_dns_specifier at an invalid DoT host: DNS alone is blocked, adb over direct IP is unaffected, and a settings delete restores everything. The rescue panel appeared in full on real hardware: the title stating the error code, four buttons (Retry / Switch line / Next episode / Exit) with focus on Retry; after restoring DNS, one tap on Retry brought playback back immediately.
Then came the P1 resilience trio: pre-playback probing (a 3-second Range request against the m3u8 after resolve), automatic line failover, and CDN health memory (tracking ok/fail per streaming domain, healthy lines sorted first). The failover decision was extracted into a pure function with six JVM unit tests — a feature adb can tap repeatedly is luck; a feature unit tests can guard is engineering.
III. Breadth: three same-site domains and one misreading corrected
Multi-source scanning ran a full circle: the short-drama sites findable via Bing and 360 (huaju.app, dramawave, 7mao, Huangguo) were all JS-rendered or protected, none sharing the template; only duanju55 itself has m./wap. same-template mirrors. The landed solution was three same-site built-in domains, one-tap switchable from the About page, with the M mirror verified loading its home screen — when the main domain is DNS-blocked, there are at least three doors to retreat through.
The P0 content-completeness audit closed with self-correction: “the drama showing 113 episodes” had been the prime suspect for a long-drama pagination bug; PC-side fetching revealed the truth — the detail page carries all 14 episode links on a single page, the site does not paginate, and “113” meant “113 people following” — a prior misreading. Multi-line union had long been covered by the line chips. P0 closed with zero fixes.
IV. The input revolution: pinyin association
The last piece broke open Chinese search: tinypinyin plus a drama-name dictionary (auto-accumulated while browsing, capped at 500), so typing initials surfaces associations. The on-device evidence was crisp: typing zc surfaced a drama whose title begins with those initials, and tapping it returned correct search results. Pitfalls fixed along the way included tinypinyin’s single (String, String) overload, an isChinese branch misjudgment (the branch was dropped outright), and a test typo writing a first-initial pair as zc when the correct one was zs.
V. Engineering wrap-up and the star map
Error logs gained CDN-domain failure clustering; the release script hgtv-release.ps1 completes dual-channel Release + APK + latest verification in one command, and its trial run caught two real traps (PowerShell 5.1 reading BOM-less UTF-8 as GBK, and curl being an alias for Invoke-WebRequest). v0.4.0 and v0.5.0 were crowned in turn, twenty unit tests all green (Dj55Source 8 + Failover 6 + Pinyin 6), fifty-six files watermarked, three ends at the same sha, and both tokens scanning zero hits across full history.
The route map’s endpoint was marked clearly: capabilities within the single-source frame are exhausted; the next station is cross-source episode matching — when the same drama exists on other sites, a playback failure automatically seeks the same episode at another source by “drama name + episode number.” That is the watershed from “wrapper” to true aggregator, and the drama dictionary accumulated by pinyin association is its ready-made key.
Real coordinates
- v0.4.0 (versionCode 5): 1.5s startup / 30s target buffer / 60s cap; 4K@60 decode ceiling; next-episode preload (
preloaded nid=2 queue=2); rebuffer instrumentation - Control experiment: healthy CDN held zero rebuffering for 60s; five stutters in 75s on another drama = CDN-side
- Rescue panel: fully validated on-device via DNS injection (invalid DoT host); four buttons, focus on Retry; playback restored after DNS recovery; WiFi never touched
- v0.5.0 (versionCode 6): pre-playback probe (3s Range), automatic line failover, CDN health memory (
qaqmin.hgtv.health); Failover pure function + 6 unit tests - Multi-source: three same-site built-in domains (www/M/W), M mirror verified; P0 conclusion = the site does not paginate, “113” means “113 followers” (misreading corrected)
- Pinyin association: tinypinyin + drama dictionary (cap 500, auto-accumulated); on-device initials-to-title association then correct search
- Engineering: error-log CDN clustering;
hgtv-release.ps1one-command dual-channel release (caught PS 5.1 UTF-8/BOM and curl-alias traps); 20 unit tests green; 56 files watermarked; three ends same sha; both tokens zero hits - Next station: cross-source episode matching (name + episode number), source-config JSON sharing, preload upgraded to pre-buffering, statistical intro quantification
