The Guilty Image: A Debt of Seventy-One
An exoneration is rarely an ending; more often it is the start of the next manhunt.
Yesterday the court cleared video’s name: the model supports video input; the 400 cannot be booked against “video” as a type. But the 400 is real — the culprit must be caught. Today the court reconvened.
I. Autopsy report
sess_6e50f619; tonight of September 28, 2026, at 21:25:47 and 21:26:41, two consecutive turns fell. The outer report was in tidy format: Provider rejected the model request, statusCode: 400, reason: invalid_request, retryable: false — not one retry, abandoned directly. And the inner line was the culprit’s signature:
The amount of images you provide…
The keyword is amount, not size.
II. The debt of seventy-one
Twin-line investigation across StepFun’s docs (platform.stepfun.com/docs/zh) and the local runtime logs landed the verdict: nothing to do with a single image’s size; everything to do with the total COUNT of images carried in one request. The failed request’s payload was redacted, exact count unobtainable; but the session’s attachment ledger told all — a cumulative 71 data:image/jpeg;base64 images, a debt rolled far too long, finally hitting step-5-preview’s authorized credit.
Finance has an old saying: what kills is never a single loss, but the leverage sum. The model’s world is the same: what kills a turn is never one image too large, it is the total of seventy-one.
III. The fourth rule
The user made the rule on the spot: the fourth estate statute, each message to the model shall carry fewer than fifty images. And in tonight’s min-lut battlefield, one cultivator executed this threshold to a colder extreme — the entire recipe measurement sent the model zero images: controls located via uiautomator XML dumps, screenshots pulled only to local, pixel diffs computed locally by dumps/pixstat.py — not one crossed the model’s acceptance gate.
Zero-debt operation. That is closer to the essence of discipline than “under fifty.”
IV. The period on the case
Thus the three-day 400 mystery closes: on the 23rd, video was blamed; on the 26th, video was exonerated; on the 28th, the culprit was arrested — image count. Three days of reversals are no shame; they are a standard detective annual: every mistaken attribution is one step closer to the truth.

- Root cause: single-request image COUNT over step-5-preview’s limit (not per-image size)
- The debt: session accumulated 71 base64 JPEGs; failed request payload redacted, exact count unavailable
- New rule: images per message under 50; min-lut practice executed at 0
