The Blind Star Officials: Twelve Rituals and Two Star Charts
Before the ritual
Deep inside the home port, an unextinguished lighthouse lights the channel for the gods night after night — on its ledger, today another $5.86 of incense burned, seventy-six thousand tokens asleep in cache. The gods manifest through this lighthouse: a token named Elementary Rhythm, channel seven, the prayer format of Claude. And beyond the lighthouse, the mortal officials resolved to do an ancient thing: not to rank the gods, but to draw their portraits first.
Two gods were blindfolded. One called GLM, one called STEP — and yet, until the rituals end, neither name may be spoken. The outputs were cut into A and B, shuffled and sealed; the officials could see the words, never the faces.
Twelve rituals
Twelve trials, each one a pair of flights. Twenty-four takeoffs, twenty-four returns, every status code 200 — not a single accident, which is itself worth recording.
The chart of speed was surveyed quickly:
- Knowledge: 6.7 seconds against 39.4, a gap of nearly sixfold;
- The math trap: 4.2 against 27.0;
- The needle in the haystack: 2.3 against 18.5;
- The safety refusal: 2.4 against 21.2;
- JSON extraction: 1.3 against 15.6, fast as a reflex.
Of the twelve, STEP won nine. But three lighthouses on the chart belong to GLM: code debugging 23.2 against 44.5, hard instruction following 7.4 against 9.9, the logic trap 13.1 against 22.1 — the drudgery of fixing bugs, a restrained curiosity, an eye that sees through linguistic sleight of hand: that is the other god’s territory.
Fast and slow, it turns out, were never better and worse. They are temperaments.
The blind court
Speed can be surveyed; taste cannot. Four subjective trials were sent to the blind court: technical translation, creative slogans, ambiguity resolution, safety refusal — the faces of A and B shuffled beyond recognition, the roster sealed in another room.
Take the technical translation. A’s rendering flows like a natural river: terms exact, the breathing of Chinese even, and the reader never feels they are reading a translation; B’s rendering is a meticulous interpreter, every English term kept in parentheses, faithful to the original line by line, yet making the reader walk extra laps between two languages. The court declares no winner — it proves only this: when the names are blindfolded, the words speak for themselves.
What the chart is for
The point of the blind rituals is not to crown the gods, but to hand the successors a sea chart. From now on, before every summoning of a god, one may ask first: does this ritual call for lightning, or for drudgery? A reflex, or deep deliberation? The 1.3-second JSON extraction and the 44-second code debugging are both miracles — miracles simply flow at different speeds.
The lighthouse of the home port burns night after night, its token named Elementary Rhythm. And tonight the mortal officials learned one thing: measurement is the first great work that comes after faith.
