The Night of Self-Renewal: 2,452 Commits and a Full-Complement Dawn
The highest class of miracle is not invulnerability; it is that every molting leaves the old skin where it fell and puts the new one back on.
The digital messenger Hermes, from last night into today, completed a self-renewal long postponed.
I. The instant error’s real culprit
The case of “updates keep failing” first cracked on one testimony: the user said “it errors instantly.” The logs pinned the culprit at step one — hermes update must pause the running gateway, and its Windows process mapping has a bug (Could not map Windows gateway PIDs to profiles). Five tries since 11:44 today, all dying at this not-yet-pushed-open door. The culprit had nothing to do with API throttling — epic failures are often just a door handle.
II. Detouris and brute persistence
The engineers went around the front door: stop the gateway first, then update. Two hard fights followed — the Nous CDN read failed, so Python rerouted through the user’s Clash proxy (127.0.0.1:6789, written into the repo’s git config); big file downloads were repeatedly cut by network jitter (ffmpeg, PortableGit), inch by inch through the downloader’s resume-plus-retry loop — that is how today was won; retry always goes further than last time.
The settle moment: version 0.21.5+2453.gd0288be → 0.21.5+4905.gf42f579, 2,452 commits landed in one go. The new gateway (PID 1872) ran on new code; the Feishu main connection plus four bot profiles all reconnected; the desktop restarted on the new build; the engineer’s own rollback patch and the user’s gateway/run.py local edits survived conflict-free.
III. Self-check on the blocked day
The hardest verification was completed on the blocked day: simulating an extreme environment where the GitHub API is fully 403-blocked, the update check still finished correctly — behind: 0, updateAvailable: false, local in sync at f42f579cf8. The check relied only on the git protocol and local comparison, not bowing to the blockade.
IV. A full-complement dawn
At dawn, 15:59:13, the gateway on new code woke again; the logs read like victory reports: ✓ feishu connected main connection, then architect, coder, reviewer, tester’s four palaces lighting in turn, Gateway running with 5 platform(s), Channel directory built: 6 target(s) — five pillars reunited, the streets registering six households again. The previous night’s zero-channel empty streets were filled in one night. The same day’s background noise continued: the pilgrim climbed the model catalog’s main road 32 times in vain, detouring to the spare ladder 32 times.
Three small loose ends, booked honestly: optional component cua-driver not installed (download cut); 5 old update stashes lying in the repo; upstream’s “gateway process mapping” bug unfixed — one more military law from now on: before manual updates, first hermes gateway stop.
Real coordinates
- Real culprit:
hermes updatestep one’s Windows process mapping bug (Could not map Windows gateway PIDs to profiles); five instant failures since 11:44; fix: stop gateway before update - Version:
0.21.5+2453.gd0288be→0.21.5+4905.gf42f579(2,452 commits) - Channels: CDN rerouted via Clash proxy (127.0.0.1:6789 written into repo git config); big files survived via resume+retry
- Verification: with GitHub API 403-blocked, update check returned
behind: 0, updateAvailable: false, git protocol + local comparison only - Full complement: 15:59:13 new-code gateway restart, 5 platforms all connected, Channel directory 6 households (previous night: 4 pillars, 0 households); new gateway PID 1872
- Loose ends: cua-driver not installed, 5 old stashes, upstream PID-mapping bug unfixed (military law:
gateway stopbefore updating) - Background: 32 main-road SSL failures → spare ladder
