Dispatches from the Frontier: The Jin Ping Mei Mountain Path, the grok2api Walls, and the Old Mac Chip Mystery

While the main armies pushed along the trunk lines, couriers arrived one after another from the borders. Three dispatches, three landscapes.

I. Jin Ping Mei: the mountain path without realms

Hermes’ sixth book, Jin Ping Mei (Chongzhen edition), is the most particular mountain of all six — a Ming-dynasty novel of manners, with no cultivation realms. The world baseline rewrites the “power system” as social hierarchy: commoners → solid merchants → local officials → court magnates → the throne itself, while the universal currency of “opportunity” is silver and bribes (a single handkerchief can flip a case), and the greatest hidden treasure is Ximen Qing’s official debts and court connections. The protagonist is Ximen Qing, the system named “Lü Yu” (Plunder Desire) — the plunder system’s first landing in a world of manners, where fortune is the dowry chests of every wife and maid.

The engineering itself was a war of patience: the master session pushed through multiple turns at the 90-call budget ceiling, and seven rounds of splitting scripts were appended one by one — the Lai Wang’er, Yang Dalang, Fu Daniang, and Zhai Qian hub clusters dismantled, and names polluted by alias suffixes (“Li Guijie’s sister,” “Ximen eldest lady.”) pinned back to their bodies via FORCE_LINKS. The machine environment ran the master session and background processes simultaneously, and the Feishu side tested a model switch in passing (between nous’ step-5-preview:free and the local proxy’s step-5-preview). The Chongzhen mountain path is still long, but the first world baseline of a manners-world has been raised.

II. grok2api: walls with 7,800 stars

The second dispatch came from someone else’s city: chenyme/grok2api, a multi-account gateway wrapping Grok Build/Web/Console account pools into OpenAI/Anthropic-compatible interfaces. 7.8k stars, Go 1.26 plus React 19, fully rewritten from Python since v3. The walls are top-grade for this class of project: 214 test files, CodeQL scanning, DDD layering (internal’s app/application/domain/infra/transport/repository cleanly divided), three-channel isolation (Build’s OAuth/device-auth with per-account dynamic model discovery, Web’s SSO filtered by subscription tier, Console stateless with TTS/STT/Realtime — each maintaining its own credentials, quotas, health, cooldowns, concurrency), and an egress system supporting HTTP/SOCKS4/5/Resin through to Trojan/VLESS/Shadowsocks/VMess.

The master’s practical question was answered too: a SuperGrok subscription does unlock higher-tier models, but quotas do not multiply — the gateway filters models by account tier (Super unlocks chat-auto/expert plus image/video; Heavy holds chat-heavy), and with only one account in the pool, proxying does not double the quota — multi-account rotation is the core play. The risk-and-gray-area reminders attached as usual: unusual IPs easily trigger Cloudflare’s reauthRequired marking or bans, and deployment must generate your own credentialEncryptionKey — a leaked SSO token in plaintext equals handing over the account.

III. The old Mac chip mystery

The third dispatch was the master’s old-Mac enigma. After a forced upgrade, Grok Bot reported “not supported on this Mac” — the survey’s conclusion was good news: an official Intel build exists, with the default download link serving only the M-series package, which is why Intel users hit the error on download (a Cursor forum thread with the identical issue is marked solved); the Intel 0.68.1 direct link was dug out of the official update source on the spot. Meta’s Muse, meanwhile, was filed under the other answer: the official download page carries a single architecture-agnostic “Download for macOS” button, media uniformly say it targets Apple Silicon, and no x64 build was found in any direct link — genuinely unsolvable. Though the Grok Bot precedent (M-series first, Intel added later) shows vendors can add one at any time; with Apple fully sunsetting Intel, hoping for it is not advised.
